Everybody knows that during the first years of life babies are learning and memorizing an enormous amount of information about the world they live in. As time goes by and kids grow up, their learning and memorizing abilities decline. The good news is that if trained well, the memory, like the muscles, can be improved and used to our advantage in all fields of life. So what it is that you can do to improve your memory abilities?
Water. 90% of brain is made of water, so dehydration is detrimental to it. Drink at least 8 glasses of water a day to keep your brain hydrated and functioning in full.
Nuts and seeds. Eating nuts prevents brain cells from aging and fills organism with vitamin B, which is essential to brain functioning in full. Fatty acids contained in nuts, along with vitamins and amino acids, zinc and magnesium, develop thinking and stimulate the brain.
Fish. Omega-3 fatty acids, which fatty fish is rich of, reduce the level of cholesterol in the blood ensuring no vascular occlusion and good blood supply of the brain.
Pay attention to your diet and try to add more fruit (oranges, bananas, apples, kiwi), dairy products and red meat to get vitamins A, E, C and B, calcium and iron to support your brain sufficient doses of vitamins and minerals that your brain needs.
Regular exercising stimulates blood circulation which has a positive impact on brain activity and memory. In addition to that, thanks to physical activity, nerve endings in the brain are formed and grow faster, which contributes to better memorization and prevents memory loss.
Find the type of exercising that works for you. This does not have to be an overwhelmingly challenging program. It is much more preferable for the exercises to be enjoyable, so you could practice them consistently.
Keep your brain active and pay attention to details around you. You can introduce playing chess, solving puzzles and other activities that are attention-intensive to work over improving your memory in a game form.
Below are some other ideas of how to keep brain active even while going through your normal daily routine:
A simple and effective way to improve memory is practicing not looking at the shopping list while doing groceries. You can have your list in your pocket, but try to do all grocery shopping not looking at it. Then before you check out, look at the list and add the product you have missed to your shopper basket. You can keep track of the results (the number of items you were able to remember without a shopping list vs the number of items you forgot about) to see how you progress overtime.
Another method of memory training is to "scroll" through the events of the previous day in your head. Try to remember as many details as possible of what you said and did from the moment you wake up until you go to bed. Then "scroll" in your memory yesterday in reverse order.
Do not neglect such a simple but effective way to improve memory as doing math in your head. For example, you can try to keep track of your expenses when doing grocery shopping. Try to find a sum of the prices of all products in you basket before you go to the check out. Doing math in your head requires attention and concentration, and can help keep your brain active and support your memory.
